Escape to Torremolinos Any Time of Year
Torremolinos has evolved into a prominent coastal resort situated in the heart of the Costa del Sol in the southern coast of Spain. Nestled between Malaga and the foothills of the Mijas mountain range, the town lies sheltered from the northern winds rendering a wonderful Mediterranean climate. Hot summers, mild winters, sandy beaches and a place to have fun contribute to the popularity of this year-round tourist destination.
Having led the tourist boom for this region, Torremolinos is still growing with numerous hotels, restaurants and entertainment options to satisfy everyone. The vast appeal of this hillside resort is not restricted to just young holidaymakers. The sandy beaches cater to family fun that will keep the kids thoroughly entertained while sunbathers welcome the safe beaches.
Over the years, most of the town’s hotels have undergone renovation providing fully modernized accommodation and offering a wide range of prices and preferences. As many of the hotels are situated along popular beaches and are busiest during the summer months, hotel reservations are recommended as the hotels fill up quite rapidly.
Recognized for its stunning seaside surroundings and beach-front facilities, Torremolinos is one of Spain's most popular beach resorts. This trendy resort encloses six main sandy beaches which during the summer months are crowded with visitors. A lot of people come to town just to enjoy a day on the beach or a swim in the clear, blue Mediterranean waters. People engaged in water skiing, wind surfing and paragliding are some of the most common water-sport activities taking place. While most skilled sportspersons bring their own equipment, many of the hotels have a shop for renting sporting gear if you just want to try out a particular sport.
Dining options are plentiful featuring an extensive selection of restaurants located within the resort, including an authentic local cuisine of excellent fresh fish from the Costa del Sol. Whether you are craving Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Greek, or even Indian, you will have no problem satisfying your taste buds, as the promenade has a huge array of international favorites. To accompanying your meal, the local Spanish wines are very tasty and reasonably priced. On the other hand, if a good old-fashioned burger is to your liking, fast food shops are ever present.
Torremolinos lives up to its reputation for being a nightlife hotspot, particularly with the younger crowd. For many people, the action begins at one of the numerous all-night bars where you can drink and snack into the night or bar-hop your way along the promenade. Nightlife starts late at the resort, and it is not uncommon to dance the night away at a disco or nightclub well into the morning hours.
In spite of its party reputation, there is nightlife entertainment to suit everyone. A walk on the beach with a stop at a quiet terrace bar or English pub will bring the tempo down. After a busy day, a live kick-back piano bar can be relaxing as well as entertaining. Bars and restaurants stay open late, so you can feel free to enjoy a late leisurely dinner.
Although some tours at the resort were designed with kids at heart, the whole family will enjoy Aqualand which is the largest aqua park on the Costa del Sol. The many pools, slides, waterfalls and amusing water rides are geared for all ages, including some rides that are just a bit more challenging for the older set.
Another superb attraction for kids and their parents is getting up front and personal with the crocodiles, or at least from a safe distance. There are over 300 crocodiles to visit at Crocodile Park with guided tours and live demonstrations put on by experienced workers. There is also a mini-zoo that caters to younger kids.
Amongst the bustling activities available, tours along the promenade are probably the most popular and provide the best way to see the sights. Over a thousand varieties of trees have been planted in the town as well as dazzling flower beds. Many of the original houses and bungalows are still standing as they were many years ago. It is not unusual for people to rise early and walk the promenade in order to experience the town in a whole new light before it becomes crowded with tourists. Likewise, during the day, if you want to take a break from the mass of tourists, on the outskirts of the town there are three scenic forest locations where you can picnic and barbecue while enjoying the freshwater springs.
Shopping is another favorite at the resort with its many souvenir and gift shops. Stretching through the center of town is the major shopping section called San Miguel. This is a pedestrian-only passageway that runs down to the beach. Storefronts open mid-morning and typically close down during the traditional afternoon siesta period during the hottest part of the day and reopen again in the evening.
You can arrive at Costa del Sol by pretty much any mode of transportation: car, bus, plane, train, or bus. The nearest airport is in Malaga, approximately 30 minutes away. Buses travel back and forth on a regular basis from Malaga to the resort. There is also train service operating from the airport. If you prefer to take a taxi, there are plenty waiting outside the airport terminal.
Torremolinos is really about sunshine and having a good time which is why so many people keep coming back. Whether visiting for a weekend or a long-term vacation, the resort is a perfect place to unwind and have fun no matter what time of year. In fact, due to the exceptional year-round weather, many people are opting to live in this sunshine city. |
