Fuengirola

Fuengirola

Fuengirola is an internationally known destination for tourists and travellers. Located along the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain, the area offers everything you would expect at a Mediterranean locale including nightlife, dining, sports, and shopping. Well-kept beaches line the town for a stretch of five miles. The closest cities are Torremolinos and Benalmadena to the east with Marbella and Mijas situated to the west.

Fuengirola History

From its Phoenician roots sprung the city's lively history which includes strong Roman and Arab influences. The area was first called Suel up to the Middle Ages and during Roman occupation. After the 10th century, the city's name changed from Suel to Suhayl. The population flourished until a fire broke out which devastated Suhayl. Residents relocated to other nearby locations and Suhayl remained uninhabited until some time in the 17th century. By then the township was called Fuengirola and a small village emerged. It wasn't until the mid-twentieth century that the area became an international destination for tourists.

Fuengirola Weather

The climate is subtropical and mild in the region. High temperatures average around 86 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Average annual temperatures are about 64 degrees Fahrenheit. The warm, sunny climate is a big draw for visitors during the summer months.

Fuengirola Population

The population of the city as of 2009 was 71,482. While the majority are Spanish, up to 25% are foreign and represent a diverse mix of people from Europe, Morocco and Argentina. The summer months bring a regular, and large, group of travelers from England. Because of the ethnic mix, foods, customs, and cultures from around the world can be found in this thriving metropolis.

Fuengirola Accommodation

From small, fishing cottages on the beach to four star hotels, accommodations are plentiful and available year round. Arrangements can be made for the rental of private and commercial villas, too. Many hotel rooms allow for a beautiful view of Costa del Sol. Most accommodations are family friendly and include a variety of amenities.

Fuengirola Restaurants

Restaurants in town also provide a range of foods and ways to dine. Fine dining can be found but lower priced options are also available. The majority of menus are printed in both English and Spanish. Andalucian tapas bars are popular spots for snack-type eating but fish and seafood restaurants are also in demand. Spanish wine is featured at many establishments along with traditional dishes. Mexican, French and Asian eateries also are available. Most restaurants offer International cuisine rather than specializing in a particular food, which allows more flexibility for a variety of palates. Coffee houses and dessert establishments offer more choices for foodies and java lovers. Tips for the wait staff are dependent upon the quality of service and food; it is not based upon a percentage.

Fuengirola Beaches

The well-kept beaches lining the city include Los Boliches, Torreblanca, Carvajal, Las Gaviotas, Sta. Amalia, San Francisco and El Egido. They stretch for a total of about five miles and are what excite tourists. In spite of the other attractions in the city, travelers and residents alike enjoy the draw of the Costa del Sol. Some of the areas are available by bus or car, while others can be accessed on foot. Visitors enjoy hammock and umbrella rentals, public restrooms, and shower facilities at most locations.
